Almost 100 people gathered to listen to my conference on indigenous studies in Québec on Thursday November 27, 2014. This conference was organized by the Cordillera Studies Center and the College of Social Sciences at the University of the Philippines Baguio.
During that conference I presented some historical, social, cultural and political background on indigenous peoples. I also shared my thoughts of the current state of indigenous studies – education and research programs – in the province of Québec.
« AN OVERVIEW OF INDIGENOUS STUDIES IN QUÉBEC »

In this discussion, Dimitri della Faille will present his impressions of the current state of indigenous studies in the Canadian province of Québec. The discussion will start with a brief introduction to the indigenous people of Québec, their history, their current socio-cultural state and challenges. Dimitri will quickly reflect on the history of settler colonialism in Québec and Canada and how this relates to indigenous studies in the province. Description of indigenous studies will include presentation of both teaching and research. Dimitri will present teaching programmes at the undergraduate and graduate levels (French and English). He will describe the available research infrastructure and funding. The discussion will also include reflections on access to higher education and research (social and natural sciences) for indigenous people in Québec and Canada.
The conference was followed by a very lively session of questions and answers.
